Where Does Fear Really Come From?
Do you ever feel your life is underwater and you are moving in slow motion? Have there been times where the fear in you overwhelms and paralyzes you? Your heart races, you may feel panic or want to cry. This picture of me in Grand Cayman at 130 feet underwater, depicts me attempting to overcome my fear that I may run out of air. Those pink orbs in the picture, while some would argue they are refractions which are common when photographing under water, in my mind, they are Angelic beings keeping me safe. Either way it was a scary day.
When we feel fear, sometimes it is a necessary reaction or physical alarm to keep us safe. Most times when it appears it is part of an emotional connection to some past experience that we have stored in our subconscious. It is much like the monsters in your closet or under your bed when you were a kid. When something fearful happens we reach to our subconscious to explain it because that is familiar to us. Then we augment the old reference by creating a current story to connect it because we are sure it is real and we know it will get worse and we can describe in vivid detail what it will look like. It is sort of like a runaway train in our brain. When we are operating from a place of fear and reckless imagination, we have disconnected from our real self and that place where our true wisdom resides.
Sometimes these connections are so immediate and so random that we don’t consciously connect it to a past trauma or experience. However, when you take a deep breath and ask yourself: What is this really about? What is the worst that could happen? What is this really stirring up in me? What is the lesson to be learned here? What part of this do I own? What is mine to do here?
When you take a moment to breathe and center yourself when the fear comes up, you can begin to be the observer in your head, affirm you are safe and make clear choices about how to react in a way that is calm and thoughtful. You make choices that provide enlightenment and support your peace.
